Ok, winters can be long and cold. industry is moving south, leaving service, retail, and farming as major employers. Yet, summers are mild, autumn is colorful, and with fresh snow winter can be wonderfully quiet. From the Adirondack Park; though the small rural communities along the West Canada Creek, and south beyond the Mohawk River Valley towns, Herkimer County is ranked 6th in area of New York counties. Most of the county's population is centered around the Mohwawk Valley villages, towns, and one city, Little Falls; making Herkimer County rank in the lower third of NY counties in population.

Herkimer County was named after General Nicholas Herkimer, who died from injuries suffered at the Battle of Oriskany in 1777. His house, still standing, is a State Park in Little Falls. The Battle of Oriskany set the stage for the defeat of the British at the Battle of Saratoga.

Rich in history and natural beauty, Herkimer is a great place to live.
